Winery and vineyard electrical

Winery and vineyard facilities put real demands on an electrical system, from production equipment to the spaces where guests are welcomed. Our winery and vineyard electrical work supports these facilities, and we plan the work to fit the rhythm of a working operation so that essential systems stay available.

Electrical services we provide in Oakville

The work we take on most in Oakville includes the following.

Oakville facts

The Oakville AVA was approved on July 2, 1993, and sits in the south central Napa Valley, about ten miles northwest of the city of Napa, between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. It covers about 5,760 acres, with roughly 5,000 planted. The area is known for Bordeaux varieties, and sixteen grape types are on record, among them Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, plus Zinfandel, Syrah and Sangiovese.

History runs deep. To Kalon Vineyard was planted in 1868 by H. W. Crabb. Oakville Station, an experimental vineyard run by UC Davis, was established by the USDA in 1903. Heitz Cellars produces wine from Martha's Vineyard, and wineries here include Robert Mondavi Winery, Harlan Estate, Screaming Eagle and an Inglenook production and bottling plant. More than 50 wineries operate in the area.

Winery and vineyard electrical in Oakville

With roughly 5,000 planted acres in nine square miles, Oakville is dense with working agriculture, and much of the electrical work is about moving water and keeping wine at the right temperature. Irrigation pumps and frost protection in the vineyard, often on timers and controls that need to restart cleanly after an outage, are only part of it.

Production buildings add bigger loads. A bottling line, fermentation tanks with glycol cooling, press pads, sorting equipment and barrel storage with refrigeration can all run at once during harvest. Older wineries that grew in stages often have panels added on top of one another, which is a reason owners ask for a load review before adding equipment. Estates with hospitality spaces also run tasting room lighting, kitchens and event power, and some want EV charging for visitors.

Where a property cannot tolerate downtime, standby generation sized to the cellar and pumps, wired through an automatic transfer switch, is a standard conversation. Battery backup can cover controls, security and communications.

Permits and power in Oakville

Oakville is a wine growing community rather than a city, and permits depend on the parcel. The county agency is Napa County Planning, Building & Environmental Services, where the Building Division manages construction permitting from plan submittal to inspection. Parcels inside a city or town are permitted by that jurisdiction instead, so verify the address with the county first.

Electricity supply works in two parts. MCE Clean Energy is the community choice program that buys the power for member communities, and PG&E still delivers it, maintains the lines and sends the bill. That split matters when you are troubleshooting. A supply question goes to MCE, while a dead meter or a downed line goes to PG&E. Unincorporated Napa County has been an MCE member area since 2015.

Oakville was one of the communities named in reporting on the October 29, 2019 Public Safety Power Shutoff, when PG&E cut power to 16,820 Napa County customers, at least the third shutoff in the county since October 9. Wineries and growers here know firsthand why backup planning matters.

Commercial electrical

Our commercial electrical services keep workplaces running, covering new installations, tenant improvements, lighting and maintenance for offices, retail spaces, restaurants and multi unit buildings. A licensed C-10 team does the work and coordinates around your operation.

Panel upgrades, EV charging and backup power

Two of the upgrades we are asked about most are charging and backup power. Our EV charger installation adds a dedicated, code compliant charger at home or at work, and our generators and battery backup keeps essential circuits running when the grid goes down. When a property needs more capacity, our electrical panel upgrades replace an aging or undersized main panel.

Licensed, insured and code compliant

Because electrical faults can be dangerous, we treat code compliance as the baseline rather than the goal. Our licensed C-10 status, license number 1078243, is open to verification with the state licensing board, and we keep every job to current code.

Residential electrical in the area

From a single repair to a full set of improvements, our residential electrical services keep a home's electrical system safe and reliable. That includes troubleshooting, outlet and switch work, lighting, ceiling fans, and wiring upgrades matched to the house.

J&J Electric is an independent contractor and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any winery, vineyard or wine region association.
