Stags Leap District facts
The Stags Leap District AVA was established on January 26, 1989, by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. It was the 104th AVA in the country and the sixth in Napa County. It lies directly east of Yountville, about seven miles north of the city of Napa, and measures roughly one mile by three miles, with about 2,550 acres in total and roughly 1,250 acres planted.
The district is small, with about a dozen vineyards and 17 wineries. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah are the best known, and the area also grows Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Zinfandel. Soils come from clay loam sediments of the Napa River and volcanic material washed down from the Vaca Mountains, and hills on three sides funnel cool air in from San Pablo Bay.
The area has a place in wine history. In the 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting, a 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, grown in what later became the AVA, ranked first among the reds.
Winery electrical in the Stags Leap District
Small production and hillside setting shape the electrical work. With hills on three sides and only a handful of estates, each property has its own service and its own load picture, and outdoor equipment has to handle the heat of the growing season.
Because cool air flowing in from the bay moves through the district, frost protection is a spring concern for growers, and irrigation pumps and wind machines draw power on short notice. Inside the winery, crush season brings sorting tables, destemmers, presses and pumps. After that, fermentation and barrel rooms need steady temperature control, and a power loss at the wrong time can threaten the vintage. A transfer switch and a properly sized generator are common planning items for estates that cannot afford a pause.
Tasting rooms and guest houses on these properties add the usual residential and hospitality loads, including lighting controls, outdoor circuits and EV charging for visitors.
Permits and power around the Stags Leap District
The district sits east of Yountville, so whether a particular parcel falls under the town or the county depends on the address. Properties outside town limits are generally handled by Napa County Planning, Building & Environmental Services, whose Building Division manages the permit process from plan submittal to inspection. The Town of Yountville handles permits inside its own limits. Confirm the jurisdiction before submitting anything.
Electricity supply works in two parts. MCE Clean Energy is the community choice program that buys the power for member communities, and PG&E still delivers it, maintains the lines and sends the bill. That split matters when you are troubleshooting. A supply question goes to MCE, while a dead meter or a downed line goes to PG&E. Napa County, including unincorporated areas, is an MCE member area.
Documented outages in the area include the October 29, 2019 Public Safety Power Shutoff, when PG&E cut power to 16,820 Napa County customers, and reporting listed nearby Yountville and Napa among the affected communities. The Atlas and Partrick fires in 2017 and the Glass Fire in 2020 also burned parts of Napa County. Backup power is a regular topic for estates here.

Whether you are fixing a problem or planning an improvement, our residential electrical services handle it. We cover repairs and diagnostics, outlet and switch installation, lighting and ceiling fans, and the wiring work that brings an older home up to current standards.
