Winery and vineyard electrical

Winery and vineyard facilities put real demands on an electrical system, from production equipment to the spaces where guests are welcomed. Our winery and vineyard electrical work supports these facilities, and we plan the work to fit the rhythm of a working operation so that essential systems stay available.

Electrical services we provide in Napa Valley

These are the electrical services we handle for Napa Valley clients.

Napa Valley facts that shape electrical work

The Napa Valley AVA was established on January 28, 1981, after a 1978 petition from the Napa Valley Vintners and the Napa Valley Grape Growers Association. It covers most of Napa County, except the portion northeast of Putah Creek and Lake Berryessa, and sits inside the larger North Coast AVA. In total it spans about 252,500 acres, of which roughly 47,200 are planted to vines across about 700 vineyards, and it is home to more than 450 wineries.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are the main varieties. Each grape and each style of production brings its own power picture. Red wine fermentation and temperature control during crush, pumps moving must and wine, sorting equipment, lighting for night harvest and refrigeration for barrel rooms all pull load at the same time of year.

Permits across the Napa Valley

The valley crosses several jurisdictions, so the agency depends on the address. Inside the cities and towns, permits come from that municipality. The City of Napa Building Division, the City of Calistoga Building Division, the City of St. Helena Building Division and the Town of Yountville each run their own permitting, and American Canyon does too. For properties outside those boundaries, Napa County Planning, Building & Environmental Services runs the Building Division, which manages permitting from plan submittal to inspection.

Many wineries and vineyards sit on county parcels, but a tasting room or production building with a St. Helena or Napa address may still be inside city limits. Check the parcel before assuming which office applies.

Power and outages in the Napa Valley

Electricity supply works in two parts. MCE Clean Energy is the community choice program that buys the power for member communities, and PG&E still delivers it, maintains the lines and sends the bill. That split matters when you are troubleshooting. A supply question goes to MCE, while a dead meter or a downed line goes to PG&E. MCE lists American Canyon, Calistoga, Napa, St. Helena, Yountville and unincorporated Napa County as members, the unincorporated area since 2015.

The valley has a record of fire and shutoffs. The Atlas and Partrick fires in October 2017 burned parts of Napa County. On October 29, 2019, PG&E cut power to 16,820 Napa County customers, and local reporting named American Canyon, Calistoga, Napa, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena and Yountville among the affected communities. The Glass Fire began on September 27, 2020, near Deer Park, destroyed 308 homes and 343 commercial buildings in Napa County, and damaged or destroyed 31 wineries, restaurants and lodges.

For wineries, a shutoff in the wrong week can threaten a harvest in progress. Backup generators sized for cellar refrigeration, fermentation temperature control and irrigation pumps, with an automatic transfer switch, are common planning topics. Frost protection fans and pumps in spring are another load worth planning for.

Planning electrical work in the Napa Valley

J&J Electric is a licensed California C-10 electrical contractor, license 1078243, based in Santa Rosa, working on residential, commercial and winery and vineyard electrical across the Napa Valley. Call (707) 480-8331, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, for a free written quote. Emergency service is available 24/7, including during harvest.

Commercial electrical

Downtime is expensive, so our commercial electrical services are built to keep it short. We handle installations, tenant improvements, lighting and maintenance for offices, shops, restaurants and multi unit buildings, working around your operation and keeping everything to code.

Panel upgrades, EV charging and backup power

Two of the upgrades we are asked about most are charging and backup power. Our EV charger installation adds a dedicated, code compliant charger at home or at work, and our generators and battery backup keeps essential circuits running when the grid goes down. When a property needs more capacity, our electrical panel upgrades replace an aging or undersized main panel.

Licensed, insured and code compliant

Because electrical faults can be dangerous, we treat code compliance as the baseline rather than the goal. Our licensed C-10 status, license number 1078243, is open to verification with the state licensing board, and we keep every job to current code.

Residential electrical in the area

Most homes need electrical attention at some point, whether that is a repair, an added circuit, or an upgrade that brings older wiring in line with how the house is used today. Our residential electrical services cover repairs and troubleshooting, outlet and switch work, lighting, ceiling fans, and the wiring improvements that make a home safer and more capable.

J&J Electric is an independent contractor and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any winery, vineyard or wine region association.
