Alexander Valley AVA: where it sits
Alexander Valley is a long valley in the northeastern part of Sonoma County, just north of Healdsburg. It lies between the Russian River and the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains. The appellation was approved in 1984 and is described as the largest and most fully planted wine region in the county. Its warm days and cool nights, with morning fog rising off the river, shape what grows here.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the grapes the valley is best known for. Growers also work with Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Sangiovese and others, so a single road can pass estates with very different cellar and vineyard needs.
Permits and inspections in Alexander Valley
Most farms, ranches and wineries in Alexander Valley are in the unincorporated county, where building and electrical permits come from Permit Sonoma. The city of Cloverdale sits within the appellation, and Cloverdale has its own building department rather than using the county. The same is true of Healdsburg just to the south. The county's directory of local building departments lists these offices side by side.
That split matters for a winery expansion or a house on a vineyard parcel. The same project can follow different paperwork depending on which side of a city line it sits. J&J Electric pulls permits where a project calls for one.
Power and outages in Alexander Valley
Electric service in the unincorporated valley goes through Sonoma Clean Power for generation, with PG&E delivering the power and maintaining the lines. Cloverdale joined Sonoma Clean Power in 2014 by a unanimous city council vote, and PG&E remains the owner of the wires there as well.
This area has a documented outage and fire history. In October 2019 PG&E shut off power to customers in Cloverdale, Geyserville and Healdsburg during a Public Safety Power Shutoff, and the Kincade Fire began near Geyserville that same week. Cal Fire later concluded it was caused by PG&E transmission lines northeast of Geyserville, and evacuation orders reached roads including Highway 128, Pine Flat Road and Red Winery Road. Some Alexander Valley wineries were evacuated and closed, though reports at the time said most of the 2019 harvest was already picked. For a winery, ranch or hillside home, that history is a practical reason to plan for backup power that can keep cold rooms, pumps and communications running during a multi day outage.
Winery and vineyard electrical in Alexander Valley
Because the valley floor is so heavily planted, a typical property here has irrigation pumps, well controls and often frost protection systems tied to the vineyard. Warm days mean cellar and tank cooling run hard around harvest. Barrel rooms, bottling lines and tasting rooms each add their own circuits, and older estate buildings often need panel capacity upgrades before new equipment can be added.
Many properties also sit well off the main roads, which can mean long service runs, transformers shared between buildings and ranch gates, security cameras and wells that depend on power. A backup plan that covers those pieces is just as important as protecting the cellar itself.
Alexander Valley wines are known for rich, ripe flavors from a warm climate, and the harvest can run hot. Chilling capacity for must and fermentation tanks is one of the first things to be stressed in a heat wave, which is when grid demand is also highest.

Commercial electrical
Our commercial electrical services keep workplaces running, covering new installations, tenant improvements, lighting and maintenance for offices, retail spaces, restaurants and multi unit buildings. A licensed C-10 team does the work and coordinates around your operation.
Panel upgrades, EV charging and backup power
When a building outgrows its electrical service, our electrical panel upgrades bring it up to modern demands. We also handle EV charger installation for drivers who want to charge on site, and generators and battery backup for households and businesses that want to stay powered through an outage.
Licensed, insured and code compliant
Because electrical faults can be dangerous, we treat code compliance as the baseline rather than the goal. Our licensed C-10 status, license number 1078243, is open to verification with the state licensing board, and we keep every job to current code.
Residential electrical in the area
A home can call for an electrician for all sorts of reasons, from a dead outlet to a planned remodel. Our residential electrical services take on repairs, troubleshooting, lighting, ceiling fans, and the outlet, switch and wiring work that keeps a house safe and ready for daily life.
J&J Electric is an independent contractor and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any winery, vineyard or wine region association.
