Electrical services we provide in Sonoma County

These are the electrical services we handle for Sonoma County clients.

Residential electrical

When something electrical goes wrong at home, or when you are ready to improve it, our residential electrical services are built for the job. We handle repairs and troubleshooting, add and replace outlets and switches, install lighting and fans, and update wiring so your home keeps pace with how you live.

Permits and inspections in Sonoma County

Where you get a permit in Sonoma County depends on where the property sits. Permit Sonoma is the county agency that reviews, permits and inspects most land development and construction in the unincorporated parts of the county, meaning the areas outside the nine incorporated cities. Those cities are Cloverdale, Cotati, Healdsburg, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, Sonoma and Windsor. Each city has its own building process, so a project inside a city limit is handled there rather than by the county.

Permit Sonoma has a Building Division, and its website lets applicants apply for permits, request inspections and pay online. Its Permit Center is closed on Fridays, which is worth knowing before you plan a walk-in visit. For a county address, a panel upgrade, a new circuit for a shop, or wiring for a barn or tasting room may need a permit. J&J Electric is a licensed C-10 electrical contractor (license 1078243) and pulls permits where a project calls for one.

Power and outages in Sonoma County

Electric service across most of Sonoma County comes in two pieces. Sonoma Clean Power is the local generation provider for the county and for Mendocino County, with the exception of Healdsburg, which runs its own city utility. PG&E still delivers the power, maintains the poles, lines and substations, and is responsible for responding to outages. New PG&E accounts in the county are enrolled with Sonoma Clean Power automatically unless the customer opts out. Sonoma Clean Power began serving Sonoma County customers in 2014.

In practice that means a bill with two names on it, and an outage call that still goes to PG&E. If you are sizing a generator or battery system, it also means your solar or storage plans may involve both organizations, including Sonoma Clean Power programs for solar customers.

Fire seasons and backup power in Sonoma County

Sonoma County has been through several major fire seasons in a short span. The Tubbs and Nuns fires hit the county in October 2017. The Kincade Fire burned about 77,758 acres in late October and early November 2019, almost all of it in Sonoma County. In 2020 the Walbridge Fire burned about 55,209 acres in the western part of the county, and the Glass Fire destroyed 334 homes in the county in September and October.

Power shutoffs have been part of the picture too. In October 2019, PG&E cut power in advance of high winds, and more than 65,000 Sonoma County customers were still without service on the second day of the first shutoff round that month, with 27,354 of them in Santa Rosa. For homeowners, farms and small businesses, that history is why transfer switches, standby generators and battery backup come up so often when people plan electrical work here.

Wine country electrical in Sonoma County

Sonoma County is described as the largest wine producer in California wine country, with nineteen American Viticultural Areas and more than 350 wineries. That farm and winery base brings electrical needs that residential work does not: irrigation pumps, cellar and barrel room cooling, tasting room lighting and service, and heavy seasonal loads at harvest. Backup power matters here because a refrigeration or pump outage during a shutoff can be costly. Call J&J Electric at (707) 480-8331 for a free written quote.

How we can help

Our work covers the practical and the planned, from fixing what has failed to preparing a property for what is next. We keep the process clear, the pricing written, and the crew licensed and code focused.

Commercial electrical

Our commercial electrical services give business owners and property managers a single, licensed source for installations, tenant improvements, lighting and maintenance. We plan the work around your hours so retail, office, restaurant and apartment spaces stay open and compliant.

Licensed, insured and code compliant

Safety and code compliance guide everything we do. A licensed C-10 crew carries out the work so it meets current standards and passes inspection where one is required, and our license, 1078243, can be checked with the state licensing board.

Panel upgrades, EV charging and backup power

Two of the upgrades we are asked about most are charging and backup power. Our EV charger installation adds a dedicated, code compliant charger at home or at work, and our generators and battery backup keeps essential circuits running when the grid goes down. When a property needs more capacity, our electrical panel upgrades replace an aging or undersized main panel.
